In 2021, Dr Peter Hart & Dr Morgan Campbell led a project with Leeds City Council to better understand young people’s perspectives on active travel (forms of travel using our bodies for motion).

Traditionally, young people’s voices have been missing from what’s assumed to be an adult-dominated issue; adults, typically, are the commuters and vehicle owners that predominantly affect travel strategies. We initially proposed a piece of participatory action research, in which young people would be trained to conduct research with peers and relevant stakeholders, then produce a set of actions that can be trialed and evaluated. The reality was significantly more complex, with multiple compromises required to achieve some kind of young people’s participation.

This seminar will provide both an overview of what we discovered from young people, but also our reflections on engaging in participatory research with young people in a space where they have relatively little power to achieve change, and it will provide an overview of a new toolkit designed as part of this project, so the methodology can be used in a range of other contexts.
